COLLECTIVE CARE | CO-HOUSING, CO-LIVING, CO-OWNERSHIP

December 2025 — USC, Arch 605A

Collective Care envisions an outward-facing co-living system organized through layers of personal space and shared living. Each sleeping pod includes a private patio that ensures natural light, ventilation, and an area for relaxation. These pods open inward to a 12-foot-thick living membrane—a shared threshold containing kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces. This membrane is illuminated by both the exterior patio windows and the inner courtyard.

From this membrane, residents step onto a 4-foot balcony that wraps the central courtyard, linking every unit through a continuous ring. Sliding partitions allow boundaries between private and shared zones to blur, expanding living space and encouraging interaction among neighbors.

Large cutouts puncture the layered system, introducing communal kitchens and gathering spaces. Maintained through shared responsibility, these spaces foster a culture of collective care that extends beyond the dwelling into the broader community.

Finally, the ground floor is hyper-public, containing small businesses, community programs, private study rooms, bike rooms, and a spacious atrium.
